One of the most famous bookstores was the Temple of the Muses in England. The shop was owned by Thomas Lackington, and boasted over 500,000 volumes of books. It was not part of a modern chain store, but it did become a popular tourist attraction. It was also the first modern bookstore.

The Temple of the Muses was destroyed in a fire in 1841. In its heyday, the shop had annual sales of PS5,000. It was the largest bookstore in England. Lackington sold the shop to a third cousin in 1798. The temple was not rebuilt. In its later years, however, it became a popular tourist destination.

Today, the Harvard Book Store relies on Slack, Shopify, Zoom, and the Pirate Ship to communicate with its staff and generate mailing labels. It also uses the Espresso Book Machine to print 400 to 1,000 books a month. In addition, it has dedicated staff for social media and uses Google and Zoom to promote events.
