Elmer Talbert “Coo Coo”

He was born in New Orleans on August 8, 1900 – died in New Orleans on December 13, 1950.

The following is a brief summary of Elmer Talbert’s career thanks to “New Orleans Jazz – A Family Album by Dr. Edmond Souchon and Al Rose (Louisiana University Press)

In 1929 he was part of the Arnold Depass Dance Orchestra. He took lessons from Kid Rena and sometimes worked with Rena’s Bass Band and with Paul Barnes. He was, like many other New Orleans musicians, a part-time musician, earning his living working in a laundromat. In 1947 he suffered a stroke but recovered well.

Between 1947 and his unexpected death from another stroke in late 1950, he made some notable recordings, all with the George Lewis Band. On November 23, 1949, jazz aficionado Herb Otto held a party at 1111 Bourbon St. The entire George Lewis Band was there, with other musicians and jazz aficionados in attendance. Herb Otto and his friend Bob Greenwood had recording machines and much of the music was recorded. On the American record label AMCD 74 “The George Lewis Band at Herb Otto’s party 1949” you can hear the result. It’s not hi-fi, but the music shines, it’s very hot, and our first chance to hear “Coo Coo” Elmer Talbert.

In May 1950, Dr. Edmond Souchon arranged a recording by the George Lewis Band on behalf of the New Orleans Jazz Club. The deal was that if Dr. Souchon could sell the record, George and the band would get the money. The recording took place at Filiberto’s Music Store on Barracks Street. A hot and muggy day in New Orleans; Cold water, soft drinks, beer and goodies were available with plenty of ice. Bandleader George kept a tight rein on the drinks, and the resulting music is quite possibly some of the great classic jazz sessions in any style. It’s yours to hear on “George Lewis Jam Session” on AMCD 104. The whole band is, of course, fantastic, but Elmer Talbert’s trumpet and incredible voice on “2.19 Blues” and “Pallet On The Floor” are records of a deserted island for me. !

Just a few weeks later, on June 5, 1950, the George Lewis Band with “Coo Coo” on trumpet did four tracks for the “Good Time Jazz” label. This was recorded in New Orleans and supervised by Jack Lewerke. In my opinion, this is one of the best qualities regarding sound and balance of the George Lewis Band. I suppose there is a degree of personal bias here because this version of “Burgundy Street Blues” was played at my wedding to Diana Clark at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in New Orleans. The CD is in Good Time Jazz L12005. GTCD 12005-2.

Lastly, on Jazz Crusade JCCD 3054, an aerial recording of the George Lewis Band with Elmer Talbert. This was a Dixieland Clambake show in New Orleans in September and October of 1950. Some great George Lewis and Jim Robinson here and sadly our last chance to hear Elmer on trumpet.

In the last two centuries, new cultural discoveries have almost rewritten history. It has been an exciting time, full of adventures and surprises. Around every corner are new answers to questions we’ve already imagined answered. And of these breakthroughs, none shines brighter than the impact of ancient Chinese inventions on modern life. As we explore ten of the greatest inventions and innovations from ancient China, you might be surprised at their influence on recent technology.

1.Paper. Paper as we know it was invented in China around 105 AD. After seeing previous attempts made with silk, bamboo sticks, and animal skins, Cai Lun came up with his own idea for it. After mixing mulberry bark, rags, wheat stalks and other things, he formed a pulp. This pulp was pressed into sheets and dried, turning it into a raw form of paper. Paper was such an important invention that the manufacturing process was a closely guarded secret. The secret was safe until the seventh century when the art spread to India.

2. The Printing. Before Johann Gutenberg “invented” the printing press in the 1440s, China created a type of printing between 206 B.C. C. and 45 d. C. It was made with stone tablets to create a “rubbing” of famous Buddhist and Confucian texts. Then came block printing in the Sui dynasty. In block printing, images and words were engraved on wooden boards, smeared with ink, and pressed onto sheets of paper. Later, movable type printing presses were introduced. According to the authors of Ancient Inventions, “by AD 1000, paginated books in the modern style had replaced scrolls, a good 450 years before Gutenberg.”

3. The First Book. Due to the early arrival of the printing press, China also claims the first book. In 868, nearly six hundred years before Gutenberg’s Bible, the first known book was printed. By the end of the Tang dynasty, China had bookstores in almost every city.

4.Paper money. While today you prefer to carry a lot of cash rather than coins, that hasn’t always been the case. The idea of ​​paper money was first tried under the Han Emperor Wu-Ti (140-87 BCE) after war depleted the treasury. He issued treasury notes, worth and in exchange for 400,000 copper coins. But, the first true example goes back much further. In China, an inscription dating from the 13th century B.C. C., “547 days” was written as “five hundred plus four decades plus seven days”. The Chinese probably created the decimal system because their language relied on characters (such as images) rather than an alphabet. Each number had its own unique character. Without the decimal system, the Chinese would have had a terrible time memorizing all these new characters. By using units of ones, tens, hundreds, etc., the Chinese saved time and trouble.

7. The Mechanical Clock. In the year 732, a Buddhist monk and mathematician invented the first mechanical clock. He called it a “Bird’s-Eye Water-Powered Spherical Map of the Heavens.” Like earlier watches, it was powered by water, but machinery ran the movement. But, after a few years, corrosion and freezing temperatures took their toll. It wasn’t until 1090, when the astronomer Su Sung designed his mechanical marvel “Cosmic Engine”, that a more reliable watch was made. Created for Emperor Ying Zong, this clock had a tower that was over 30 feet tall. It housed machinery that, among other things, made wooden puppets jump out of one of the five doors at regular intervals throughout the day. (Much like the modern idea of ​​a cuckoo clock.) The first reference to a clock in Western history was in 1335, in the church of San Gotardo in Milan.

10. The rotor and the propeller of the helicopter. While the ancient Chinese didn’t actually invent the helicopter, they were involved in its creation. In terms of adding muscle and weight, these guys need to eat more, cut back on their aerobics, and increase their weight training using heavier weights. An ectomorph is encouraged to use heavy weights but take breaks between reps. Aerobic exercises should be kept to a minimum if you plan to gain weight or bulk up.

The Endomorph (aka the “Apple” body type, more belly, less hips)

Entropy, evolution and intelligent design

Two articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals under the title “Entropy and Evolution”. One (Daniel Styer, american journal of physics, Flight. 76., No. 11, Nov. 2008) says that evolution does not violate the second law of thermodynamics and the other says that it does (Granville Sewell, BIO-Complexity2013 (2):1-5, June 22, 2013).

The three main branches of physics are nuclear physics, dynamics, and thermodynamics. Nuclear physics is the study of the evolution of stars and the creation of elements. Dynamics studies the laws of nature and the creation of chemical compounds.

Thermodynamics is the study of liquids, solids, and gases. The zeroth law of thermodynamics is that temperature is measured with a thermometer in units called degrees. The first law defines heat and internal energy. The second law is that heat flows from hot to cold substances. The third law is that 454 degrees below zero is as cold as it gets. Thermodynamics has nothing to do with how machines work, biology, or the evolution of stars. A pendulum is not a thermodynamic system. A pendulum exists only in the mind of physicists, and has no temperature or entropy. A pendulum and a Boeing 747 in flight obey the laws of dynamics, not thermodynamics.

Evangelists have the unintelligent but intelligible idea that evolution and the origin of life violate the second law. The second law can be expressed by saying that entropy, which is measured in units of energy per degree, always increases. Evangelists juxtapose the fact that a sugar cube put into a cup of coffee will dissolve (second law) with the fact that proteins exist (evolution).

Entropy is related to knowing the location of sugar molecules in Cartesian coordinates (x, y, z). The entropy of an undissolved sugar cube is less than the entropy of a dissolved sugar cube. Entropy is also related to probability calculations because there is a chance that the sugar molecules in a cup of coffee will drift towards a point and stop sweetening the coffee.

In trying to understand where proteins come from, biologists calculate the probability of obtaining a protein with the random selection of amino acids. There are 20 amino acids and an average protein contains 300 amino acids. The probability is very small because each amino acid has to be in exactly the right position relative to the other amino acids.

Evangelists confuse informative knowledge of the location of amino acids in a protein with knowledge of the Cartesian coordinates of the sugar molecules in a sugar cube. They are also confusing the probability calculation of biologists with the probability calculations of physicists. There is nothing improbable about a protein because proteins exist. It is quite unlikely that a sugar cube will reconstitute itself in a cup of coffee.

At the beginning of his article, Styer shows some understanding of this with the statement: “Disorder is a metaphor for entropy, not a definition of entropy.” Sewell is ignorant of this truism, as is Styer. However, Sewell crushes Styer with the following statement:

According to Styer, the Boltzmann formula, which relates the thermal entropy of an ideal gas state to the number of possible microstates, and thus to the probability of the state, can be used to calculate the change in thermal entropy associated with any change in probability. : not just the probability of an ideal gas state, but the probability of anything. (page 2)

Sewell formulates Styer’s statements in a theory he calls the “compensation argument.” He then argues against the “compensation argument” instead of ridiculing it as unintelligible. Sewell is confusing the first law with the second law.

Suppose you have two pieces of metal, one hot and one cold, and you bring them into thermal contact. According to the first law, the internal energy of the hot part will decrease and the internal energy of the cold part will increase. There will be no loss or gain of energy. The increased energy from the cold piece is “compensated”, just like a merchant is compensated when he buys something.

However, the matter is entirely different with respect to entropy. There are two ways to see what happens. The idea that the increase in entropy of one is “compensated” by the decrease in entropy of the other is nonsense.

This conflict between Sewell and Styer over the second law is related to the cultural conflict over the theory of intelligent design, which is related to the cosmological argument for the existence of God. Many people mistakenly think that the cosmological argument involves a “first cause” and is invalid because there can be an infinite regress of causes. In the context of this reasoning, the Big Bang, the origin of life, and evolution are considered evidence of the existence of an intelligent designer. The cosmological argument, according to Thomas Aquinas explained by Etienne Gilson, is based on the existence of finite beings and on the idea that there is an infinite being, not a “first cause”.
