Parrot Care Tips: Creating a Stress-Free Environment for Your Bird

Many people have been thinking of buying a parrot and brightening up the house with these magnificent and adorable birds. In fact, parrots are some of the most intelligent birds in the animal kingdom and having one or more in the house can mean lots of fun and memories to last a lifetime (some parrots live to be 50).

However, parrot care is something that many people are unaware of and is a bit more complicated than bringing home a puppy or kitten. A family that wants to adopt a parrot needs to make the adjustment to its new home as easy and stress-free as possible. Several aspects must be considered: the moment of their arrival at your home, the comfort and safety of their cage, and their diet.

The importance of letting the new family member adjust to their new home as quickly as possible can never be stressed enough. Making sure Polly is comfortable in her new environment as soon as she arrives means relieving trauma and excess stress. As such, bringing her home from the pet store early in the day rather than at night will give her more time to get to know everyone in the household and make her adjust faster. Placing her cage in an area where she has a good view of everyone without making her feel exposed can also help her adjust faster. Placing the cage against a corner of a large room with high traffic is the best way to achieve this.

Making sure the cage is the correct size is also an important factor in making it easy for your parrot to fit in. Too large a cage can cause a baby parrot to fall and get hurt. Partially covering the cage before putting your new feathered friend in ensures they have an area where they can go if they feel threatened or exposed.

A proper diet is one of the most important factors in pet care and this also applies to parrot care. If your parrot was not receiving a healthy enough diet under its previous owner’s care, avoid immediately changing its diet to a healthier one. Give him the same food he’s used to for a few weeks, then gradually switch to his new diet. A drastic change will only make the transition to your new environment more difficult and traumatic.
